Schappe silk (or spun silk) is woven from the short fibers that are left when silk cocoons are processed. Although it is made up of salvaged material, it retains the wonderful qualities of silk; it is light, soft, and breathes well. The main difference is that schappe has a soft, matte surface and is not as smooth as classic filament silk. Schappe is the best of the spun silks in terms of quality, without the nubby texture of noil.
This schappe plain weave is similar in appearance to cotton, but has a softer, gentler hand. The fabric is medium light weight, with a moderate drape. Try it for blouses, tops, dresses, or light trousers and skirts.
Care
We recommend dry cleaning this fabric at a reliable dry cleaner. In our tests this fabric stood up to gentle hand washing. If you risk hand washing, use lukewarm water and a delicate detergent for woolens; do not wring or squeeze dry; block dry on a flat surface. Dry iron on the lowest setting.
