The model for this medieval reproduction was the burial wrap of a young man called Fernando, the great-grandson of the founder of the textile workshop where it was woven. Its regular geometric pattern consists of eight-pointed stars ornamented with a small, stylized floral motif and medallions containing paired griffins standing under the tree of life. The balanced combination of angles and rounded shapes, as well as the weaving method, indicate that the textile is of Arabic origin. The fabric was probably produced in the south of Spain, which was then dominated by Islamic culture.

The original textile fragment is held at the Cistercian Monastery of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas in Burgos, Spain.

This historical brocade reproduction is a Jacquard weave with a pure silk warp and a weft of rayon and lurex. Premium material makes this brocade very sturdy, yet soft, gentle to the touch, and breathable. Reproductions of period brocades such as this are perfect for sewing historical costumes and also bring something special to modern interiors or contemporary fashions.

We recommend lining this brocade with a natural material such as silk or fine linen.
