Gdansk Brocade with Fish, Griffins and Dogs, Black and Gold

Reference : 103-02-0035

Our replica of a 14th century brocade. The pattern shows winged fish devouring a griffin while being grabed by a dog. The silk itself might have been woven in Lucca in Italy although experts say for a Lucchese silk it is missing the characteristic leaves and flowers.

This fabric is also shown on a painting of Coronation of the Virgin by Conrad von Soest dated 1420 (Provincial Museum, Münster). According to Decorative Silks from Otto von Falke the original fabric was used for a chasuble found in Gdansk. Museum of Decoratove Arts, Berlin
